PLAIN Carbon Fiber
Carbon fiber fabric with a plain weave, also known as a 1×1 weave, is uniform and looks like a checkerboard. Strong, firmly interwoven fibers are provided by the over/under weave structure of the tows. One definition of fabric stability is the degree to which the material retains its original weave angle and fiber orientation. Plain weave carbon fiber fabric has a high level of fabric stability, but it is not ideal for intricate curves due to its lack of flexibility. On the contrary, it may be handled more easily without wrinkling or stretching the fabric. Consequently, it is applicable to two-dimensional shapes like flat sheets and tubes.
Plain weave carbon fiber fabric has a severe crimp because the tows are interlaced so closely together that individual fibers are curved sharply. The sharp crimping may induce stress spots, which can eventually lead to cracks.
