TWILL Carbon Fiber
The most well-known variety of carbon fiber fabric is a twill weave, which may be either 2×2 or 4×4. Each tow in a 2×2 weave travels over and then beneath two other tows. Similarly, each tow in a 4×4 weave goes over and under four other tows, as the name implies. This over/under weaving provides a striking diagonal pattern. In contrast to a plain weave, a twill weave has larger gaps between the tow interlaces. As a result, there are fewer crimps and fewer potential stress areas.
Twill weave is adaptable and stable enough to conform to intricate shapes. Careful handling is required since any more deformities to the weave would render the fabric unusable. Although 4×4 weaves are simpler to create than their 2×2 counterparts, they are not as stable.
